The Mechanical Mind: A Philosophical Introduction to Minds, Machines and Mental Representation
Tim Crane
If you're a casual reader looking for bold explorations of the mysteries of consciousness, etc., then you should probably look elsewhere. This, however, is a very useful and clear text concerning the mind as information processor view (also known as the computational/representational theory of mind) that tends to dominate academic discussion. A good introduction to the 'cognitivist' paradigm and the philosophical issues that arise within it. The book avoids/evades most metaphysical issues, but achieves what it sets out to do very well.
